Hi. My name is Vasco Azevedo.
I am a software engineer from Porto, minimalist by default. I like small, direct, well-finished software — and saying no to almost everything else.
Work
Pixelmoinho — Backend
First job, Porto startup. Shipped an internal inventory tool in Go that still runs there.
- Backend in Go, Postgres and queues.
- Learned tested backups the hard way.
Malha Digital — Backend Engineer
Remote billing systems in Go and Kubernetes. On-call, runbooks, pagers.
- Kept billing systems up and boring.
- Left before hating pagers.
Independent — Software Engineer
Part-time backend contract plus my own tools. Fewer meetings, more code, untouchable Fridays.
School
Primary school at EB1 de Valadares, then EB 2,3 de Valadares where he joined the robotics club and found Python. Secondary school in Science and Technology at Almeida Garrett, in Gaia, finishing with 17.2. Best grade Maths A with 19.
University
Degree in Computer Engineering at ISEP, 2016 to 2019, averaging 16. Favourite courses: Operating Systems and Compilers. Masters in Software Engineering at FEUP, 2019 to 2021, with a thesis on running small language models in the browser with WebGPU, graded 18.
Training
AWS Solutions Architect in 2022, Kubernetes CKA in 2023, Stanford Machine Learning on Coursera in 2021. Nand2Tetris in 2020 for fun, Stanford Compilers in 2022 for pleasure, analogue photography in 2023 for the grain.
Free time
Trail running three times a week, 32 km in Gerês done, 55 km planned. Analogue photography with a Canon AE-1, chess around 1700, sourdough every Sunday. A tiny homelab, bedside Kobo, morning V60. No TV, almost no podcasts.
Short philosophy
Minimalist by default. Intense, not casual. I say no to almost everything to have time to make things.
I prefer working alone, direct text, no jargon. If the opposite turns out true, I change my mind.
